several solution:

cutting threaded Golf 2 to keep a piece of thread, the solder on the upper body 32b
as photo mail precedament

or control coilover universal manchoner / solder leg 32b
the idea is really simple but cool back more expensive is not sure of getting the right diameter and good couplelles
like this

I'm still hot even for me a short story spring assembly not be disappointed if its not already pretty descent!
since the problem of thread to messure is support-rod high on the leg 32b, which reduces therefore the threaded adjustment at the lowest ....
I do not know if you follow

T as un beau voiture.

oops, sorry for using french language only. Your translation seems to be an automatic one, here is the official version by the author:

You have a nice car. Rust on the rear sidewalls is almost normal. But there are repair sheets available, they are not too expensive but you need welding and painting. Concerning your doors (especially the front doors), there is no rust on the bottom parts?

I don't think that you speak german but there are two great websites about the Passat 32b:

www.passatclassic.de
www.passat-kartei.de

The latter one is the website of the semi-officiel union of Passat 32/32b drivers, there are some real specialists!

I am just going to brighten up my car a little (with the help of a competent repairman), it has just 30 years and I can register it as a "vintage car" in german, provided that it is in a quite acceptable shape.

Welcome Winfried. How about a thread on your Passat ?

WinfriedB
22-10-2012, 14:50
Well, there is not much to say about my car, except that is one of the remaining 89 Passat Variant with the 63kW engine in Germany - and probably one of the very few of these with automatic gear box (these were never very popular in Germany). During the past months I had restored it cosmetically and also did quite a bit of work myself. It also needed some repairs, especially on the rear suspension, but NO welding on the main frame. I hope it will be registered as "vintage car" in the following days, and this will be the moment to present it to the public in all its beauty.

Love the raked look. Now some rims and call it done!

WinfriedB
29-10-2012, 10:48
Why new rims?? The original rims do not look too bad on this car. And if they are rusty they can be repainted: brush off dust particles with an iron brush, two coats of anti-rust paint and one or two coats of rim silver paint. If you want a smooth surface you can add one or two layers of transparent paint. The silver and transparent paint are available in spray cans.

You can do all this without taking off the wheels, however it is better to take off the rims. You do not have to remove the tires if you tape carefully around the edges of the rim.

My re-painted rims (which originally were quite rusty) do not show any new rust after six months. A guy once showed me repainted rims (without taking off the tires) and I could not believe that it was not the original factory paint, the surface was very smooth due to the layers of transparent paint he added.

WinfriedB
29-10-2012, 11:57
PS. If you repaint your rims and remove the wheel bolts make sure to clean the conical bores after painting. The conical part must not be coated in any way, because it is the friction between the conical bore and the conical part of the bolt which keeps the latter tightened!

Nice update! What wheels are those?

On the last pic, these are the standard wheels/rims, made of steel and almost always rusty ... mine show spots of rust one year after re-painting.

I think these rims still look best on the Passat 32B. The same rims were used on many other VW models of that era so it is no problem to find some in good condition - if you are willing to change over the tires.
