thanks guys.. here is an update
the last cruise it went on
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/gtg%20and%20shows/Camp%2018/IMG_9831copy.jpg
well, i had to do some new work to her to make her more comfortable, better suited, and feel a whole hell of a lot more stable.
so, old exhaust manifold.. went to replace the downpipe with a TT dual downpipe, realised, it wouldnt work with this early toilet bowl manifold..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May2007.jpg
so out it goes, and to take its place.. a nice bosal header. thought i would give it a little bit of a new guster with now high temp paint.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May20071.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May20072.jpg
so, then realising that the damn car was super greasy, i changed this
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May20073.jpg
for this, now nice and clean, not greasy.. including new mounts.. no mo greasy arms.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May20074.jpg
so, now, i have nice new subframe, new mounts.. well, needed new tie rods.. so cleaned up the ol rack a lil bit, and added some urethane bushings....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May20075.jpg
well, i was thinkin, why not replace the a arms too, and add a sway bar, and add urethane busings for the a arms. the car didnt have a sway bar.. this is where the astro glide comes in handy.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May20078.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May20079.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May20077.jpg
so, now i want to add some brakes.. some nice 10.1's that i have had for about two years now.. maybe they might get some use.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May20076.jpg
a coilover shot just cause.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May200710.jpg
lets dress her up a bit now.. new tails, and rear euro bumpers installed.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May200713.jpg
some painted bits in the bay.. plus some new gaskets and she still needs a bath inside, but that can wait..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May200711.jpg
headlight harness.. nice relayed kit..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May200714.jpg
new grille, added an 8v spoiler... 16v didnt last more than 5 miles..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May200712.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May200716.jpg
some interior now.. doorcards, seats, steering wheel.. just need a non cracked red stripe dash.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May200717.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May200718.jpg
and pretty much how she sits til i get my wheels someday.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May200715.jpg
more updates to come.. cant wait to drive her again.. TT stainless exhaust going on this week, and some tweaking/tuning to make her pas DEQ and she will be all legal.

In Oregon, south of WAshington..
the plate was supposed to declare theyear of the car as i thought it was an 85, but when the title showed up, it was an 86.. oh well.
Oh ok, I went by that WA plate on the car in that one pic.
I lived in DesMoines/Seattle for about a year, spent some time with the DCI guys in Eugene/PDX as well...was thinking maybe I met you back then (this was 2000-2001).

ahh, yes, i got the car from a guy in WA. I am up there frequently with the DCI guys as well. I wasnt part of the club back on 01 ish time. It would have been good to meet you had I been though. I am sure at somepoint you guys will make it to one of the National GTG's.. or someday i will make the trek over there.
I hung out a lot with Taylor and the guys back then (like Jeff and Ryon, oldskool LOL).
I'll be back in the SeaTac area, I love that place to bits. Just get me a greencard :)
So you figured out what your german plate means in Dutch yet?
Didn't noticed the german license plate till now. It's nice :D
I just looked at this picture a little bit better:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/swals2/Brett/GTi/May200715.jpg
I noticed the bolts of the frontleg are mounted the wrong way. The nuts should be on the the closest to the rear end of the car. Why? If the nuts would fall off the bolts will stay in place a bit better.
What are the plans with the rearend? The rusty bits, leave it and stay with this look? I like it but wouldn't leave it like that.
@RubenD: Are you talking about the bolts en nuts in the lower mount bracket of the front suspension?
So you think that in this situatie, if the nut would somehow fall off, that the bolt would fall out easier than if it's mounted the other way around? Why? because of the air passing by the bolt? There is no reason for it to fall out easier one way or the other...
Also, if the nut gets off, you're fucked either way! These bolts can't take forces from the side (dwarskrachten)...
plus if you would be talking about airflow, wouldn't this way keep the bolts on?? (not that air does anything to bolts...
It's just the same with aeroplanes, the bolts have to be bolted pointing the right way (depending on the situation).
I indeed was talking about the bolts that connect the suspension leg to the wheel bearing housing...
If the nuts came of the camber would indeed be way out of line but you still would be able to drive a few meter and make it to the side of the road safely. That is better then grinding the front of your car away on the asphalt @ full speed.
And no they can't take force from sides. But that isn't the point. You will feel the difference in your steering wheel. So you still have time to respond to that.
Since all parts of the car have the same velocity the bolts will stay in place. If it is mounted pointing with the "head" to the rear in theory it could fall out when going through a pot-hole.
If we take the friction force in mind their is a really small chance it would fall out (if mount the wrong way) howevery it still is possible. Better avoid it.
My boss had it happen, somebody mounted a lowering kit and @ the highway the nuts came of. Well can tell you he was feeling comfy when his A8 "kissed" the ground.
Okay, sorry, on-topic again!
So, I still don't believe it can make a difference... In other situations it could be a disadvantage if you think about it in your way.. Who says hitting a put-hole causes a reaction in the way you say.. it depends from puthole to puthole, from situation to situation, maybe if you leave it like this it will be better, but no-one can calculate that on forehand...
And what if you would install them the way you say, and he would hit the brakes because he hears a nut fall of (;)), wouldn't that just make it more likely for the bolt to fall out?
Conclusion, this isn't something you can calculate... although you cartechnicians would love to!
If you're that worried about loosin' bolts/nuts, ye might as well put clevis bolts+cotter pins on there...
Correct torque setting should be enough though. And maybe some loctite.

Fuck the car!! I would be worried about my nuts if they came off

So you figured out what your german plate means in Dutch yet?
I have not figured it out yet. Honestly, i havent even looked, I was hoping you would just tell me. My dutch in pretty outdated. ;)
I hear what you are saying on the suspension bolts. it does kinda seem that if i switched the direction of the bolts, that if the nut fell off, i would have some more leadway time to safely drive my car to the side of the road. although, i think if i applied the brakes it might be more consequential to have them the way you are speaking. If the nut fell off and the camber just went to poopoo, more of the weight of the car would actually be hold ing in the bolt anyways so im not too concerned with the direction of the bolt anyways. Thanks for the imput, i did have to think about it for a while, and i came to no real co0nclusion either direction it goes in.
This car is mainly going to be a seldomly driven car anyways, and those bolts are my least concern. I am trying to remember if i left any other bolts loose when putting everything back togheter.. haha..
as far as the rear end goes, it will go with the rest of the car. it will be a single stage flat paint job.. jamed and everything.. the color is going to be carnival red pearl. the wheels to be polished when they arrive and the insters to the wheels color matched along with the inners, calipers, and a nice effect ont he grille. quarter flares, and fat molding to come on as well, polus a small drop as well..
interior is next once i get the car back on the ground, but thats a suprise.. :)
quarter flares are cool, but i don't think the fat moldings will do..
Well Brel, it says you love to munch the carpet :)
