figured i'd continue the topic here..
I bought this 1.6 petrol caddy back in 2007:
http://www.volksforum.com/albums/files/4/20100123-g96qwts1b61b63n6uuft3yasp9.jpg
drove it for a couple of months, sold it to Stijn, who turbodiesel'd it but sold it in parts later on. He sold the caddy shell to Jaap in dec '08, who put it in storage. I bought it back and just picked it up last weekend:

why do you run it on ms?
original management isn't that hard to install?
i know, but just because i can :D
probably will overhaul the engine later on and install throttle bodies, but the stock ABF is an ideal base to hook up and learn all the ins and outs of MS

"active fat-arse lowering systems inc."
you're still not as heavy to get it low enough :D
of course i'm swapping the lowered springs for coilovers later on
not much progress as i was tuning my bike with a new set of cams, carbs and exhaust..
I did order more stuff like a mechanical clutch and cable, late cabriolet long axle, 4 new cv joints, scirocco 16v brake cilinder
Still doubting which wideband lambda controller i should choose, Innovate, Techedge or Zeitronix..
And i still haven't chosen a colour. I need too, cause i need to paint the engine bay and am probably using Sikkens Yacht Paint, but they're limited to 16 colours and i need to go see them in real life
O yeah, and i need a new right rear light because Alain's neighbor accidently smashed it with his trailer
what about the colour you mentioned saturday ??

i'm still in doubt about dolphin grey, whale grey, pacific and atlantic blue, but i just want to see them in daylight

why do youmuse sikkens yacht paint acctually?
because i'd rather spend the money on technical stuff than a full respray
towed the car with Alain to my own garage yesterday. Unfortunately the motorchain slipped off the forkliftspoon and broke the oil sump :(
luckily nothing else got damaged, but these alu sumps are expensive!

That sucks, but at least it's an easy fix.
i did some research and found out Seat Ibiza and Cordoba Cupra's with ABF motors use the same steel pans all early VW bigblocks use
they only hold 0,5L less oil but i'll keep an eye on my oil temp anyway
price difference of 160 euros makes it worth a try ;)

I wanted a silent exhaust for the RDW check, but stock mk1 caddy exhaust is only available in straw-size. Custom stainless is a bit too expensive at the moment, so i bought an ebay Sharan VR6 anlage i can make fit.
Lots of length, 55mm diameter, nice round mufflers and damn cheap.
Doesn't have to last decades anyways..

Actually it wasn't. Engine was cold and lots of fresh air because i couldn't hold it in but behind, so the reading was changing all the time. At least i know the controller is fast ;)
Nice project Marc. Now get on with it!:)
bought a new welder and was repairing rusty spots in the enginebay, but slow progress, because i'm busy working on the new website ;)

after a couple of months of inactivity, i started work on the caddy again.
Still derusting and smoothing the engine bay, so nothing interesting to see there.
I did try to fit the westy grill though, and holy shit that thing is big compared to a euro front!

I do like the look of it with the steel bumper on a caddy though :)

instagr.am..;).. nice updates Marc!
Shortened and cleaned up the intake manifold and throttle bodies today, so that the throttles are as close to the intake valves as possible for fast throttle reaction, but still enough room for the injector rail.
Total length is still 290mm though, and according to various sources on the internet the minimum length should be 300mm.
I ordered 4 velocity stacks though, so those will add to the length and therefore add some some low end torque for drivability.
Not yet in the picture, but fortunately bending the tabs on the throttles was enough to account for the wider offset
http://www.volksforum.com/albums/files/4/07172c5e322911e19896123138142014_7.jpg
Velocity stacks came in today. They need some modification to fit, but i'll figure something out :)

thanks guys! There's just so much i didn't think of and still have to do, even though putting 16v's in mk1's is something i've done several times. Doing just an ABF swap would have been done in a weekend, overhauling (totally forgot to take pictures when the engineblock was open  ), renewing and improving a lot of stuff is also taking a lot of time, which i don't really have right now. I just want to half ass it right now..

never seen before.....
it's a kit by Grasshopper Drag (Claus von Essen) which uses some mk1 5speed parts and the original shifterbox. Shifts a lot tighter than the 02A cablebox

Engine bay looks already very nice, what kind of clutch cable are you using and where did you get it from.
if i compare the length of my mk1 o2a clutch cable from htt and yours.
there a big difference in length, yours is longer.
and is the end connected to the gearbox bracket at the end facing towards the rearend of the car.
i also notice that you cut and rewelded the up and down moving lever.
to aling the bended stainless arm with the balljoint connected to the above mentoined lever.
clutch cable is from a mk2 1300. The lever on the gearboxtower you mean? Yeah, you have to bend that one.
Haven't done much up until this week, was so busy with work, taking trips to Worthersee and the USA and spent more time working on and driving the harley
here are some Instagram updates though:
fuelpump, housing and cabriolet axles with new cv joints
http://www.volksforum.com/albums/files/4/20120803-gg2bk86gqw7n9ah99gqb9bq823.jpg
g60 brakes installed and bled (leaving the massive rear drum brakes on for now:
http://www.volksforum.com/albums/files/4/20120803-rnt6ct28gk8ka9u3ux1b1yjpwp.jpg
Took some Monroe AirMax airshocks with me from a US trip last june.
They're for a Corvette, but work just fine with new bushings;
http://www.volksforum.com/albums/files/4/20120803-cyd85f1bds6bsgw31nec64dngy.jpg
Got more stuff done:
Installed fuelpump, filters and lines
routed coolant lines and radiator
installed a Spal fan (original wouldn't fit because i moved the radiator to the right)
Finally found fitting velocity stacks
hooked up vacuum for brakebooster and fuelpressure
lots of small stuff i forgot :D
So this is where i'm at right now:
http://www.volksforum.com/albums/files/4/20120803-p6s8r6xnu6187nt2mktdnjme7i.jpg
Still got to make a couple of brackets (coilpack, throttlecable, etc), weld an exhaust system (from the Sharan VR6 parts) and make an engine and interior (84 fusebox to 77 dash) wiring loom.
i just love it marc.
imo you're fine on the caddy rear drums, they're big as f$ck.
i'm using the same fuelpump on my turbo mk1,not too happy with it,it's so damn noisy.....:(but well,i guess i have to live with that.
really? I hooked it up to 12v, and mine was really quiet!
I did hang it next to the tank though and in a mk1 foam housing..
really? I hooked it up to 12v, and mine was really quiet!
I did hang it next to the tank though and in a mk1 foam housing..
mine is under the hood.....maybe that is what generates the problem.it has to suck all the way from the back  but if it works,it works right?
yup, i was really surprised how quiet it is. I guess the foam housing damps a lot too
Took me some time to set up, but made my Megasquirt setup wireless with bluetooth :)

did a preliminary wiring to check everything and it's alive!
NMTsy8O6n20
Runs a little rough on this basemap, but starts up right away and idles smooth!
I think i need a new alternator though, it sounds horrible and is only giving out 13.6V
I just checked the oil level on the Vento for a little trip to Disneyland tomorrow, and guess what, that 2E has the exact alternator bracket i need to clear the framerail, so i'll be swapping those out next week

Looking verrry good, shame of all the lost photo's ;)
 Facebook must have deleted them, i'll upload them here later on.
Already switched the alternators though, but took the throttlebodies and manifold off, and gave them to my buddy "MacGyver" to weld up. I wasn't happy with the sawed off stock mani and silicon couplers, it might flex too much when hot. Might be ok if you use carbs, they're forgiving, but injection is just too precise to deal with inlet volume fluctuations.
He called me today his alu welder broke down halfway through :( ,but i'm recovering from dental surgery, so no rush
got my manifold back, before and after:
http://www.volksforum.com/albums/files/4/IMG_2794copy.jpg

and got a rear sliding window shipped :) :)
http://www.volksforum.com/albums/files/4/IMG_2909.JPG
Cool! that read window in special
And, is IT running?
How are the throttle boddies connected to the manifold now youre not using the silicone hoses?
I've got a audi 80 type81 with an ace/9a engine with the original bosch controller with a lot of problems.
I'm thinking to make a switch to ms , but i'm not sure wats the best, carbs or injection, and which parts i need.
Hessel
I'm actually still working on this, the 2-3 spare hours i have free each month since i started my own business :(
I'll do a big photo-update later, but i damaged a throttlebody last week trying to make a better throttlemechanism (gaspedal throw was really short due to the bike linkage) I already bought and prepared a new set, so i can move on.
Oh, and a bought some new wheels last april in the US, had them refurbished by the Polish Pimp :)
http://www.volksforum.com/albums/files/4/IMG_6979.JPG
Sometime around feb. 2013, i discovered that the crankshaftbearing was leaking oil, so i had to remove the gearbox. Chose to take the whole engine out, so i could so some other things i wanted to do anyway
http://i.imgur.com/CwBKa07.jpg
Installed a new seal, changed the heat wrap to black (looks much better :)), installed a OEM oilpan instead of the thin aftermarket one and had my flywheel lightened and balanced by Hurricane Racing:

On one of my trips to the US, one of my friends offered me a set of BBS E75 15" 5x130 three piece wheels with adapters :D
I had to have the adapters and centers machined, and sent them to Peter (RS-Velgen) for refurb and frontmount:
http://i.imgur.com/wrs9uTH.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/uVoqkGc.jpg
I couldn't find any decent exhaust for the Caddy, so i bought a brand new Jetex Golf 1 setup and welded my own exhaust. I never liked how the original exhaust exits out of the side, so i decided to let i come out the back. Can't wait to hear how it's gonna sound, Jetex is always known for their sound :)

New throtttle pickup to give me full pedal throw instead of only 1/3, new brake vacuum lines to clean it all up and new Pipercross filters

Nice work and nice wheels!
All this while, i've also been converting the Caddy to early US Westmoreland Rabbit Truck specifications :)
At first i wanted to keep it a surprise, but i couldn't resist myself when i got the front end mounted and the US bumper with overriders in place

Very nice project ! Good for a lot of inspiration !
The bbsen are very nice!
Not really, with Bolt Action, customer cars and having a kid, i didn't have much time left for my own projects so i spent most of it on the S6 and the Harley.. Maybe this winter, so i can start on the squareback
