Just look at the position of the exhaustmanifold.

(since there are 160occ's in both groups)

The terms shortblock and longblock does not have anything to do with the engine type, it is a term commonly used when talking about exchange engines, in any type of car. A shortblock is the engine with internals, but without the cylinder head, a longblock is the engine with cylinder head, but still without the accessories like manifolds, alternator etc.

When talking about aircooleds, a shortblock is the engine case with the crankshaft and camshaft installed, but without the cylinders and heads. A longblock is a complete engine case with internals, cylinders and heads.

An engine ready for installation is also commonly called a turnkey engine.

I know another thing to create maximum confusion.
2.0 ABA ABF 2E etc engines are 16mm higher (engine block itself) so they are called longblocks.

It's not only common in the aircooled world, look to the world of american V8 engines, and you'll see the exact same terms there.

We refer to the 16mm taller blocks (only the ABA 2.0 8v here) as a Tall Block BEACAUSE of this confusion Hahahaa. But it sure does make for a Revvy motor Now to get a true ABF head to stick on it HAhahaa
