how do i let the air out of my cooling system type 2 1600 diesel from 1985.

You need to raise the front end of the van up at least 20 cm and purge the air via the bleeder screw on top of the radiator. The engine needs to be hot of course, so the thermostat will open and circulate the coolant to the front end of the van.
