This program was developed partially by NASA and it's quite a bit of fun.
Yes its 200MB+ MB so you with slow internet it will take a while!

mumble jumble but does describe what it does....

World Wind allows any user to zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth, leveraging high resolution LandSat imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) elevation data to experience Earth terrain (or any planet with the data) in visually rich 3D, just as if they were really there. Virtually visit anyplace in the world. Look across the Andes, into the Grand Canyon, over the Alps or along the African Sahara.

okay... so what am i not doing right?

so far all i have is a 500mb version of a regular desktop globe. :confused:

i mean, i can zoom in by scrolling & see placenames.. but the images get a bit clearer so you can see a country, but then once you can see city placenames the images just get pixelated/distorted.

i moved over to a major american city & zoomed in and the place names kept zooming in until it was naming specific buildings. that's great... but you can't see them. just grey/green distorted background colour w/ floating placenames.

umm they are still woking on europe etc so it will be hard to see specifics... i can see den haag for example quite well but not down to specific roads etc... unless its laan van medervoort.. which is easy to recognize.
yes its black and white one it gets really close.

on top there are 3 icos for different satalites.. some work better in oher places than others.... and if you go to the site.. it tells you they are still working developing it... so its not perfect.
try the nile estuary, or the niagra falls or the great wall of china, or cape canaveral... you can see those to a great extent... also the alps and eiffel tower.

i didnt say it was perfect... but to me its a load of fun!

ah, okay - i'll try a couple other places then.

i guess some of the places i clicked simply haven't been done yet.. but it's strange seeing as one was a major us city. :confused:

okay, went back to the same us city and switched to the usgs sat images - now THAT's detail!

jack shit for images of where i live though. :(

the usgs images are cutoff, as expected, along the canadian border. but what strikes me as slightly odd is the level of detail that's available for anyone to download & view - including pretty much *exact* coordinates.

ie, since i've been there many times - i know which buildings i'm looking at, i can pick out two border crossings between bc (canada) & washington state (usa), including a commercial truck crossing. (kind of hard to miss with a lineup of semi trailers in queue!)

you'd think making this good of a map available to anyone on the planet might be a security concern. but then again, that's only in *todays* world o' fear - and only a concern re: ppl that would actually do something crazy, in which case those people would locate whatever they wanted to locate anyways. hrmmm

now if only the whole world was as detailed as the usgs sat images!

I dont understant this program. I zoomed in on New York City, or more closely Manhattan. In the middle of the screen it says "111 Wall Street Heliport" but I see nothing but green. Is there supposed to be an image of the town here?

Btw, I was looking at Nasa's World Wind web site, and see that version 1.3 was released today, I'm going to uninstall the current World Wind that I have installed right now, and install the new version, maybe that will clear things up for me.

I mean, I do not get any images like this... :(

along the top of the program there're 3 satellite buttons. one is landsat 7 or something, the next is pseudo 7 and the next is usgs. use the usgs one when zooming in on anything in the usa.

here's an example of a beach that's about 1/2 an hour from here just on the other side of the us border. the white is canada - where the usgs images are cut off.

(you can zoom in a lot farther on individual buildings etc, but it gets pixelated after a certain point)

Btw, version1.3 looks a lot better than 1.2 did!
