Hi
Here's the story of changing the timing belt on a 1986 VW Vanagon (T3) 1.6 diesel engine. It was a bit of a fight with the hex bolts of the waterpump and crankshaft pulley. A welding machine was needed to get stuff done;
VW Vanagon T3 timing belt change (http://www.nomadic-one.com/reflect/vw-transporter-t3-timing-belt-change)
It took about 6 hours to get the job done.
The Vanagon is known as the VW Transporter in Europe.
Cheers!
