It came 20cm yesterday :( I thought the winter was over.. but hell no.
But as you can see most of it vanished through the day.

Tjaap 24-03-2008 13:50

Update

Today I tried on the body before I start working on it.
I had to check if I needed some modifications after the chassi-rebuild.. and yes, I need some mods ;)

After narrowing the frontsuspension 4" the strut towers touches the body.
I suspected this before lifting the body, even if the word on the street says you don't have to if you "only" do the 4" beam.
No biggy.. small mods needed.

I also need to modify the rear to be able to mount the body without removing the cup-bar. Also i minor modification :D

The body is "hovering" 8cm over the chassi..hehe

So... you need to add a 8cm drop to this (+ 3cm drop with the right tires)

..and 3 cm additional drop (+2cm drop with the right tires) in front

I didn't get the right look and feel but I was able to measure everything I needed before starting with the body.

Let the bodywork start :D

*Big update*

A lot was done this week. Started working on the body.

Still looking good, but I found out that the left rear corner has been changed.
It was not 100% in place so I am going to change both corners and the rear panel.

I also found this. Previous owner had tried to hide this under some paint :screwy:

Friday the parts I ordered from California wednesday arrived. Pretty fast delivery to Norway as always, 3 days!! :D

Yesterday I cut out all the rust from the channel. Luckely the heater channel was as good as new :D

And after som work it was finished :D

Also started on the rear. Cut out the rear panel...

As you can see, the right corner wasn't to good

The first corner changed and this time it's where it should be. It was a helluva job to get it right *puuh*

And today everything was in place and the rear complete again

As you can see, I also got my new bumpers today :)
I am going to modify the brackets a bit, more info 'bout that later. ;)

Then I started cleaning this :D Almost ready to weld it in place.

First layer with bondo..

That's it for today. I'll continue working with this tomorrow...

Tjaap 30-03-2008 20:38

LOL, typical beetle.. even the best ones have all kind of surprises hidden..

I see that the Dollar value is also good in norway:);)
I did a porsche 912 last month and it was cheaper to get parts from the US than from annywere else.

Ohh yes. I have bought all the parts for my project @ CIP1 in California.
Saved A LOT of money!!!

Jepp :) They do.
Some of it is because of bad repaires from previous owner.

Anyways.. now everything is gone and good shape again. ;)

Stijn 31-03-2008 00:04

Nice work, nice work! I still think that is one excellent Bug body, I've seen FAR worse and considered them 'okay' :)

Dollar rate is bliss, my eBay account is redhot :tounge:

DrLaban 06-04-2008 13:25

Workin' in the sun :D

Sunny in Oslo this weekend. So I took the car out of the garage and worked outside instead of inside the garage.

Started working on my inner arches in front. Need some more space for the front suspention after narrowing it.

Instead of just cutting out a part I sliced it and hammered it in shape. This is a picture early in the process.

Gasfiller finally gone. Last layer with bondo is on. Finito baby! :D

Started some cleaning of useless holes in the inner arches :)

Then some REAL fun. After modifying the inner arches etc.. I was ready to try on the body again. I had a BIG smile in my face when I sat down behind the car an saw this FAT ass!!!!!!! YEEAH BABY!!

Still, the car will be a bit lower with the correct tires.. :)

Tjaap 06-04-2008 14:33

REALLY love this thread, do enjoy your work! First saw your work lowering your cabbie, man you don't do things halfway :wow:!

I am currently also installing air in my mark 1 convertible, if you like you can see some pictures at: http://www.golfcabrio.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=21157. For more pictures go to mijnalbum.nl: http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Album=BX78XOAM.

Keep up the good work, I only have one complaint: you have us waiting for pictures for more than a week now, this is not acceptable :D

DrLaban 14-04-2008 00:16

*Update*

Well guys, here's some pics from the last week.
I was supposed to paint the car inside this weekend but I was so damn busy at work so I got a bit delayed :(

But, now it is ready for some paint tomorrow :D
I need to mask the windows etc. and then I'm good to go..
I am almost ready for the paint outside. Just need to modify the bracket holes for the bumpers ;)

Tested some chrome for my steering wheel, but it didn't fit.
So tomorrow I have to hunt down a correct steering wheel. ;)

I ended the evening by doing some mods to my speedo. This is the original..
and tomorrow morning I will post the result ;)

DrLaban 14-04-2008 06:34

..as promised ;) :D Details, details, details...... same color in the speedo as on the wheels etc.

Tjaap 14-04-2008 11:01

Yepp :)
And then it is a success. I think that when you do a modification, ordinary people shouldn't see any difference, but entusiasts should see/feel that something is done. ;)

I got some more mods like this so just stay tuned ;)

DrLaban 14-04-2008 22:55

FINALLY PAINT!

I finished the first two layers with primer tonight (inside the car)
Very pleased with the result. I took some time before I got the perfect roughness in the primer. Correct mixture of paint/thinner and adjustment of the paint gun.

Tjaap 14-04-2008 23:07

ooooohhh you textured it.. almost bedliner like..

Not that much, but it is kinda ruff ;) Just the way I want it.
I KNOW that I will get a lot of comments from the show`n`shine people, but I can`t care less ;)
I know that the result will be a fat ride :D

DrLaban 15-04-2008 22:31

*Update*

Last layer of primer inside the car tonight.
So.. a little "sneak peak" mates??? ;)

RubenD 15-04-2008 23:21

Stijn 15-04-2008 23:36

And tomorrow I am starting outside the car.

Great fun with all you positive feedback guys :D It gives me an extra gear..!

DrLaban 16-04-2008 19:31

*Update*

A LOT of work was done on the car today. The car is now sanded and ready for paint. Just have to sand the last bondo tomorrow.

I also sandblasted the engine bay after the fire. I thought it was much more work, but it wasn't so bad after all. :D

I put primer on all the inner arches and the backend of the car.

Before I closed the garage for tonight I sprayed the last layer of paint on the wheels. :)

RubenD 16-04-2008 19:42

DrLaban 17-04-2008 18:33

Rear: 195/65s on 8"

*Update*

Last night I sprayed the last layer of bondo. Going to sand this today and the car is then ready for paint tomorrow.
I got two days off at work now so I will get a lot done ;)

More chrome trim is installed on the dash. Around the speedo.

Did some more "color coding" ;)

And another little Køstom "thing"....

Hmmm.... what's happening..??

I give you.... the Apple ashPod :D

Of course in the same rust red color. It is a PERFECT fit inside the ashtray.
Had to do some minor modifications to make it fit.

The 60Gb ashPod'en will be connected to a 4-channel amp and a hidden front system and a subwoofer.

Tjaap 23-04-2008 12:11
