swapped new jets in.
ran nice for a few mins.
then lean lean lean.
not sure if its the fuel pump or if its the carbs.
my poor chromed carbs :(

Chromosexual 05-09-2009 19:03

new carbs on order :(

otti 06-09-2009 01:29

dd you check your fuel filter and lines, not that something is clogged there a little..?

Big Caddy 06-09-2009 01:33

might be worth a try to remove the large nuts on the top of the carb and pull out the little filters and check them.

Chromosexual 06-09-2009 02:39

sure worth a try.

jungli81 06-09-2009 17:17

well its not clear whether she will be making it... I wont be able to work on her for another 2 weeks and i pretty much got NOTHING done.

i am really not sure if i feel like shelling out any more money for this POS anymore.

Chromosexual 07-09-2009 02:49

thanks for the encouragement fellas ;) :D

Tjaap 07-09-2009 05:46

how about this. If you don't make it to h2o you'll have to post 20 pics of the car..... That'll encourage you to finish the damn thing. ;)

wanna help fund my truck  :D

otti 09-09-2009 15:06

the v3´s go low enough when you are on 16´s.
they are made for actual suspension not for beeing stup hard ;)
nobody has bad luck with mk1´s- they just have their own minds :D
belive me i know...
good for you that you have a good job, now stop whining and post some pics
of what was not low enough...

Chromosexual 09-09-2009 22:55

Jens, you got my pic right?

rabfan 10-09-2009 17:41

Wow. the carbs were so done you had to order new ones? Yikes!

Big Caddy 10-09-2009 19:55

couldn't get large jets to do squat (richen it up). kept running lean even with 60F9s on a stock motor. that would be way rich on my motor which is stock minus the cams.

I scratched my head many times.

Chromosexual 11-09-2009 03:50

i so fucking hope this fixes this issue or no H20 for Louise

Old Guy 13-09-2009 03:30

Any good news Paulipoos?

Chromosexual 13-09-2009 03:41

Steve I wont be able to get to the UPS store or get to the 78 until next Thursday. Cutting it so close its not funny.

Old Guy 13-09-2009 06:07

:shake: Where is the "biting my nails" icon when I need it.

Wish your 78 was on RJ's and my way to OC. We would be there in a heart beat to help. :( I'd rather help you get Louise going than to drink beer Thursday and Friday.

Wait, what did I just say?

Chromosexual 13-09-2009 13:00

you just said some very kind words - thanks!

again i just hope we can get something fixed. car wont go into storage until i get it all sorted and i cant/wont work on my tdi until i do so..... and i really need to be driving the tdi right now.......................

Big Caddy 14-09-2009 16:06

Just so you have this and not forget it.

swapping carbs:

1. Remove linkage pin from lower ball socket joint (little clip that hooks over that keeps the joints from seperating) do not be rough with the ball and socket joint. the ball will break easily.

2. Remove three screws that secure your top linkage to carb top (right carb)
3. Remove remaining two screws on right carb top and five screws from left carb (careful with the floats)
4. Move carb tops and top linkage out of the way

You can swap to the new floats from your new carbs at this time. adjust the float level.

5. Sop out remaining fuel form carbs
6. Remove the 8 nuts that hold the carbs to the manifold (do not lose the washers or spring washers if they have them
7. pull the carbs from the manifold studs (do not lose the gaskets and their rubber rings
8. You may need to remove the trumpets from the carbs to allow for clearance first
9. Decide which carb you want on which side.........shouldn't matter
10. Install the linkage (sync scew and idle screws) on the new carbs.
11. There are flanges that bend over the butterfly nuts that keep them from turning. bend them and remove the nuts and reinstall them.
12. Mount the gaskets and make sure the O-rings don't fall out of place
13. Slide the new carbs on and install the nuts (do not over tighten)
14. The sync linkage should be fitting together now. don't worry about adjusting yet
15. Install the tops from your old carb (chrome ones you moved out of the way)
16. install the top linkage that you moved out of the way.
17. Hook up the section of linkage from the old carbs to the lower linkage.
18. insert the clip that holds it on.

double check everything.

while you have your carb tops off, check the float level.

Bottom left is the DCOE. you have square floats but they are about the same

otti 14-09-2009 17:58

^woah, information overkill :(

paul you just have to do it!
get her done
i didnt get the pic though, so you have to come with louise that i can see her ;)

Big Caddy 14-09-2009 18:43

Paul understands why I posted a book of info :) much easier for him to just read it then for me to explain it to him.

Big Caddy 14-09-2009 18:46

oh, and when you get it running for h2o. change the oil. I'm sure there has been a lot of fuel getting into the oil.

And bring your assless chaps again

otti 14-09-2009 20:19

hey tom are you brnging your car to h2o as well??
joining us for the last leg of the c2c trip?
