Brake interlock on Passat problem
 

I have a 1999 US Passat which has a brake interlock which prevents me from getting the automatic transmission out of park without pressing the brake.

On Friday, I was not able to get it out of park. I was instructed to pump the brake in order to disable the interlock. I did, and still cannot get the car out of park.

What went wrong, and what should I try?
