MK3 Golf TDI gear problems

Hey, I have just bought a 1995 M reg golf TDI and I am having problems getting the car to stay in gear. I have the cable version and I have adjusted it on the box and no improvement. Would this be a gearbox problem and not the remote?

If it is the box where do I fine the codes?
