Hey Nick,
Yep, you pretty much got it all correct, I'm impressed  . First time I built my 16V turbo I used two VW ABA headgaskets, which only lasted one trip around the block before it blew. I was using standard headbolts though, with standard torque so maybe that's where it all went wrong.
After that I built it with just a single headgasket (running stock compression!!), medium boost and 98 octane gas -> worked like a charm.
About the 9:1 compression with a 8v block: mentioned that, seen the same trick done before, also works with 1.8 8V blocks under 16V heads. Still think this is one of the easiest AND best solutions.
